Marsden Needs some help!!!
Dillon 1st MRB replied to Bullock's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
If you had multiple Anti-virus software working, that would do it. Only 1 AV at a time. Anything else and they will continually scan everything in real time.... It will thrash your CPU as far as workload. -
If you are using Windows 7, just use Vista drivers. There is no difference. Just ensure you are using 32 or 64 bit. I am almost willing to bet you have an issue with your chipset. Because its a laptop, you need particular drivers to address your PCI, PCI-express, memory controllers, SATA drives, etc. Get the Vista drivers for your chipset and video card (if they aren't combined). Uninstall ALL of the old stuff. Run Crap Cleaner (ccleaner). There is a link to it in the old topic I started on it here: Ounce of prevention Get rid of all the old gunk. Reboot. Install the new chipset driver. Reboot. Install the new graphics driver. Reboot.

If you or anyone sees him, have him grab me in vent. I'll walk him through what I would recommend. Since he has run some scans and removed Malware, I am willing to bet it is a BHO that respawns it every time he opens a browser. He needs malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org). I can walk him through it, but that's only if I see him. -

My New Server.
Dillon 1st MRB replied to Linvill's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
What type of a server are you building? Is it serving a large amount of data? Your umm.... short movie collection? You may have some solutions that are cheaper/better for you. The hardware you are building is more for running things like... well, a MySQL server or numerous web pages. I'm wondering if you would be better off building a home server with less computing power for serving up files and possibly printing. -
Do you mean 3rd Platoon or 1st Platoon, 3rd Squad (the Euros)? I suspect you are looking at 3rd Platoon, which is for our Extended LOA/MIA's. Since they aren't here, they don't care about a lack of insignia. They will be moved back to an active platoon once they are back. Oh, and kids. Don't do crack. Unless you are in prison.

Help with Laptop
Dillon 1st MRB replied to Bunt's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
Its your typical integrated graphics w/ HDMI. If you need better, there are some very good USB-based sound cards that would give you the high quality you need. There are very, very few upgraded sound cards in laptops. However, anything that is digital (HDMI) will essentially by-pass the analog decoding. -

Given that you have quite a few Adobe products there, I'd revise my recommendation. I would find something with an nvidia chipset and IGP. Here is what I see that would be in your budget, but would give you decent bang for the buck, particularly with photoshop/illustrator. Samsung Laptop - $799.99 Its got the 310M processor by nvidia, 4 GB of RAM, 500 GB HD and a Core i5 processor. This will be a beast for school work. Battery life won't be great, but it will definately work very well for you. -

Asus - $449 w/ free shipping this may be your winner. Check the specs, but its a very solid system. Sale ends 1/31. And you get yourself some extra money. -

Dillon 1st MRB replied to Bunt's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
There are quite a few options you have there. Here are some questions I have for you: Is playing blu-ray important to you? Do you want a 1080 screen? HDMI out? Are you going to do any gaming on it? Perhaps something that can kinda sorta get by with DODS? Which do you need/want more: power or battery life? How big of a keyboard do you need? I have hands like big Christmas hams and sausage-like fingers... I can't deal with a small keyboard. As for brands, I'm pretty high on Acer right now for price:performance. But HP, Sony, Lenovo, and Dell are all top-notch. -
From this day forward, I'm only going to think of you as a tranny.

Browser Problems and OS.
Dillon 1st MRB replied to Remedy's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
It depends. First rule of troubleshooting is making sure you have a clean computer. There are some pretty nasty malware out there that disable the alt key so you can't ctrl-alt-del to shut down processes. As for a Windows 7/alt-tab in Source issue, this was a pretty big issue until an update in November. Its odd that it is coming back. All updates have been made for Win7, right? -

I can't speak for this guy, but the I've done a fair amount of umm... sparring outside of adult beverage serving locations and the hardest I ever got rocked was by a guy that knew Aikido. Now I want to learn it. Also, Aikido doesn't really lend itself to MMA. Its more of a "get someone down and make them stay down" sort of style.

The config will help with a few things. However, if you have hardware issues at your school, you've got a tough nut to crack in terms of looking for a solution. When you are experiencing lag, I'd run a traceroute and see if its within your school's network. The other option is that it could be you have background processess that are using the internet. Torrents, AV that are updating... stuff like that. You may also have a NIC that is going out on you.

I'm going to take a different approach here. I look at KDR as a useful measure of particular skill: shooting well and preventing your own death. Are these important skills? Well, yeah. They generally make for a more enjoyable experience. But, for me, its situational. Do they have any flag caps/breaks? If they have a high number with a high KDR, THAT is a good player (in a pub). But, that person is also a pretty valuable asset in non-realism competive leagues/play. But, if you have a high KDR and very few flag caps it means one of two things: you are a "camper" who sits in places with little to no strategic value and just enjoy killing the hapless/unaware. I include people who sit in trees, on buildings, difficult spots, whatever in this. However, there are people who can have a high KDR and control a strategic localtion. I would put places like the Tank House or Axis Sniper House in Donner, apartments (Axis or Allied) in Avalanche, the apartments/ causeways in Argentan, the wheelhouse in Kalt, the apartments or beach in Palermo .... if you have a high KDR and are simply owning these locations, you are creating an environment where it is nearly impossible for the other team to win. We've all seen or been in this position. If you can control a strategically important area, with a high KDR, in a pub environtment, this is generally a good player. One of the things to keep in mind is that in this environment, it is incredibly hard for a rifle to dominate in these scenarios. It is generally a support or an assault as you need a lot of rounds to kill groups of people. A rifle has to work in a continual retreat and advance and dominate an open zone. For a rifle, think of Donner. You can bounce between the Axis Suze house, tank alley, Charlie Tree, and back alley. If you are in this zone and you can dominate these strategic locations without dying much, you are a very valuable player. The thing to remember is that a player who can stay in a strategic location between respawns is not going to be absent for the 15 to 30 seconds it would take to get back into that position. With a 7 second 2-man flag cap, that can be invaluable.

Keyboard issues
Dillon 1st MRB replied to Benson's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
It sounds like you have some sort of an international keyboard map. Do you by chance have a french keyboard/keyboard map installed for your computer? If so, you may be gaming in French mode. As I don't have any experience with French maps, I'm a bit out of my depth, but that's what it sounds like to me. -
Wireless Mouse Screwing Up

Logitech makes great, multi-purpose mouses (mice? meece? meeces?). However, for gaming purposes its hard to beat the Razer brand. -
Wireless Mouse Screwing Up
Dillon 1st MRB replied to Hudson 1st MRB's question in Hardware Guides & Maintenance Questions
That is a tough one. Can you re-sync it? HAve you tried a system reboot? Give those a try and see what happens. It might be bad batteries, but that hasn't usually been an issue since... well, the early 2000's. -
New Service - Configs - New and better config!!!
Dillon 1st MRB replied to Dillon 1st MRB's question in Day of Defeat: Source Questions
ITs probably because there is an automatic read-only on your config.cfg. Right click on it. Select properties. Uncheck it as readonly. Add your change. Save. Check readonly.
