  1. Its actually a pretty good question. The simple answer you would get from a lot "tech sites" would be that its already out of date. However, the answer I have for you is that it depends on two things: 1. The resolution you game at. - Your card is very good up to 1680x1050 2. The games you play. - you won't be able to crank the eye-candy. That being said, I have a 5770 that I used as a replacement for a GTX285. Now, the GTX285 was the fastest single chip video card made until the 5870 came out a year ago. However, I found that I just didn't need that much power because I only game at 1680x1050. Before that, I had a 4850. The 5770 sits between the 4850 and the 4870, but is nowhere close to the 5850. In the next couple of weeks, you may be in a position to upgrade for cheap. Once prices stabilize, look around between the various flavors (clock speeds) of GTX460 and the 6850 and see which has the better price. Then post your video card up on craigslist for $50 (it currently sells for $80 on-line. You may be able to make a pretty nice upgrade for ~$130. When I sold my GTX285, it was still the fastest card nvidia made (and there is some wierd group out there that is VERY pro-nvidia and nvidia-only), and I got $175 for it. Granted, it was selling for $350 on line, but it was not nearly worth that price. It got snapped up pretty quick.
  2. Buying video cards is one of the most difficult prospects out there for the average gamer. Seperating the "fanboi" from the informed consumer is pretty tough, but I'm going to start offering some gratuitous advice on video cards. Right now, if you are in the market for a new gpu, my advice is to *HOLD*. Do not buy a video card for a couple of weeks. AMD has just come out with a very nice mid-range product that is on par (or possibly a bit ahead or behind) nvidia's latest factory overclocked cards. The issue at hand here is the pricing of these cards is in quite a state of flux. You have several cards within $100 of each other that are all pretty good cards. Right now, the AMD 6850, Nvidia GTX460 (1 GB), AMD 6870, Nvidia GTX 470, and the AMD 5850 are all withing $100 of each other. However, Nvidia just slashed prices on their GTX 460's, but rumors are that AMD will be cutting prices as well. Also, AMD has pulled a bad trick on us all.... the x8xx-naming now designates their midrange. They've done away with the x7xx's (5770, 4770, etc) and are now calling the 6850 and 6870 the midrange. The 5850 and 5870 are still their strongest/fastest cards. Confused enough? Yeah, I'm not a fan. Here is a breakdown by performance with their current prices. GTX 460 768 MB $169 Radeon 6850 $179 GTX 460 1GB (625 MHz) $199 GTX 460 1GB (810 MHz) $215 GTX 460 1GB (850 MHz) $229 Radeon 6870 $239 Radeon 5850 $259 GTX 470 $259 The hard part here is that the Radeon 5850 can be had for as little as $199 while the GTX 470 can be had for $239. Please look at this as a good time for consumers. If you have specific games you are curious about the performance of, I can hit up some reputable sites for you and find out. Just don't ask for the best overall card, because its just too tough of a question. Prices should have a bit more flux in them in the next two weeks, but if this is your price bracket, wait a bit and you'll get a great deal on a great card.
  3. The thing about having it set at 100 is that if its a 66 tick server, the server will (usually) reduce your rates. Aren't both of our servers 100 tick? If they aren't, I will change the file asap. As for the rates thing, I may fiddle with that. Once DODS transitioned to the TF2 engine back in 07 (?), it did open up the rates top end.
  4. The file stays as a file. If you follow the post, you'll simply copy it into the path provided. Then just edit your config.cfg file to have the last line say: exec game.cfg
  5. The Medical Supply office is pleased to announce that they will begin assisting with creation of configuration scripts for enhanced play in DODS. What we will aim to do is create a seperate script for you that will be executed inside your existing config.cfg script. Now then, that being said, there are two goals that a script can accomplish: 1. Make the game more 'viewable.' - brightening darkened areas (ever wonder how people can see in the dark corners of Donner? This is how). 2. Increase your fps, especially for smoke and special effects. We will aim to have a "catch all" script for everyone that will do both. We here in the medical supply office want to lend our experience and knowledge in this and hopefully provide you with a better, more effective gaming experience. In short, we want you to be the best players you can be. The first thing to know is the location of your config files. These files are located in the following path: program files/steam/steamapps/(your username here) /day of defeat source/dod/cfg (if you run a 64-bit version of Windows, it may be program files(x86)/steam). Locate your config.cfg file. Right-click on the file and select Properties. Make sure that "Read-Only" is not checked. Click "Apply" if necessary. Open it with either wordpad or notepad. On the last line of this document, add the following: exec autoexec.cfg Save the edit. Go back into properties, and make the file "Read-Only" Now download this file to your cfg folder: Autoexec.cfg*UPDATED* Also, if I've helped you out with configs, please provide a bit of feedback for us here to let us know if we are doing it right or if we could do it better.
  6. Sounds like a bad registry key/entry to me. Download crap cleaner (ccleaner) and see what happens. Run it, clean it, try it again. Crap Cleaner at Majorgeeks.com
  7. You won the Nobel Prize? Holy shitfuck. I hope you go straight to PFC after BCT's.
  8. Pretty sure you just named your own movie quote......
  9. Bloodsport. "Freddy, what I am saying is: know your limitations. You are a moron."
  10. After our conversation on vent, the modem was the only real possibility. Glad to hear it is fixed.
  11. Let me know when you get your new modem. We'll see what happens.
  12. Patton - fucking awesome movie. "Nobody puts 'Baby' in a corner."
  13. I just hate how Beck has a wierd view of history. It isn't... well, accurate. Most of the revered founding fathers were fairly anti-christian (particularly Jefferson).
  14. I hate being late to (too?) parties. http://www.1stmarineraiders.com/index.php?showtopic=7036
  15. They essentially dumped Cliff Lee's salary for half a season and then went out and got Oswalt. Oswalt's salary is $15 and Cliff Lee's Salary is $9. Half a season of Oswalt is $7.5 m compared to $4.5 for Lee. The Phillies could have and should have kept Lee. It should have been Halladay/Lee in the post-season.... No one would have wanted to play against that.
  16. I heard this guy on npr this morning. Freaking hilarious and awesome.
  17. Keep the phone in the back pocket. Ass cancer > cancer of Big Jim and the Twins.
  18. What kills me is that, they could have. They essentially swapped Lee for Oswalt. Lee > Oswalt and has a cheaper contract. The Phillies were dumb with Lee.
  19. I too share your gift of laziness. I just hammered a fucking #3 nail into the wall and called it good. Its a 5.5" nail that I put 3" into the wall. If you need it pretty, I have paint and a bedazzler.
  20. Its been re-interpreted as bare arms. Short sleeves for everyone!
  21. Quite possible the best beer in the world. A couple of other favorites that haven't been mentioned yet. I live 20 miles from the New Belgium brewery so Fat Tire is still one of my favorites. I'm almost ashamed how much I like this particular beer.... but I LOVE Rock Bottom Brewery's Irish Red. My daily drinkers are decent beers that don't break the bank: Blue Moon (with the stupid slice of orange cause its freaking good) and Miller High Life. It IS the champagne of beers.
  22. Can you run a trace route and let me know what you see? Drop into the command line. If you are running windows 7 or vista, you should find it under "accessories". XP just has a Run command at the start button. Type 'cmd' and it will drop you into it. Type 'cd \windows' then type tracert 8.6.76.164 It should give you results like this: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600] Copyright © 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
