  1. A 9400GT is a tough card to really get a high amount of fps. What are you hitting right now? 60 is the best target you can hit. I would definately turn *OFF* HDR. Lower your textures, shadows, models, and everything else to medium. This actually will make the map brighter for you and easier to play. I would also look at getting a new nvidia driver. You can find it at: Nvidia's Driver Page Make sure you get the right version of the driver. There is an enormous difference between 32-bit and 64-bit. Your 3.25 GB of ram make me thing you have 4 GB of available ram, but you are either using Windows 7 32-bit (instead of 64-bit) OR you have an out of date BIOS. In looking at your BIOS info, it is from 2005. IF (AND ONLY IF) you have Windows 7 64-bit installed, you should update the BIOS. This will give you .75 GB of more RAM, bringing your available physical RAM up to ~3.62 GB (always good with Windows Vista/7 for prefetching). After that, we can look at adjusting your cvars in your config. Its been a while, but Janke may have some good input on this. I can send you a sample user config for you and we can go from there.
  2. You make "another sport" sound ominous. Was it tennis? Rugby? Cheerleading? Lacrosse? Rowing?
  3. I pulled off a triple play In T-Ball. Yeah, at my size, I was more of a football player. Played a bit of golf when I still had knees. Grew up with a couple of golf pros so family foursomes were a bit.... wow. EVERYONE wanted to fix me. At the same time.
  4. I'd forgotten about this. One of my favorite tech sites has a building guide. It picks 4 price points and builds to it. The levels are: 1. Econobox and the alternative 2. Utility Player and the alternative 3. Sweeter Spot and the alternative 4. Double Stuff Workstation and the alternative Tech Report's Summer Building Guide For someone making their first dip into buying components, its really a great read. It builds a $500, $800, and $1200 budget and then ~$3500 for the double stuff. When it comes time for the operating system, I would definately avoid 32-bit. The limit on memory alone is worth going to 64-bit. For your needs, I'd go with Home Premium. Unless the price is the same (student discount), then I'd go Pro.
  5. WD Black 1 TB - $89.99 GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard - $108.99 EVGA 01G-P3-1372-TR GeForce GTX 460 Superclocked (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - $239.99 G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH - $119.99 AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDX945WFGMBOX - $135.99 Total - $694.95 I did a couple of things here... I went with a GTX460 when you could get away with an ATI 5770. Its a much better card for only ~$60 more. I went with an AMD cpu because I like the AM3 upgrade path. If you want to upgrade in 2 years, you'll still be able to find a new AMD cpu that will drop right in. I like Ford's build a lot. The i7 is the best processor right now. However, there is a price premium on the motherboards and then it uses triple channel ram (you have to buy one more stick of ram), and it won't be a socket thats around much past the end of this year. If Intel ever stuck with a socket for longer than 2 years, I"d be down. As it is, I had an AM2+ motherboard that will still accept new processors. Its 4 years old. Great investment. But, if you go i7, you won't regret it.
  6. I agree. Build your own. If you would like, I can give you some recommendations. Do you have any preference of brands of the following: CPU/Processor: GPU: Motherboard Hard Drive RAM: If you don't have one, I'll throw some options out for you. If you have a solid case, DVD drive, keyboard and mouse, I think we can get something really good between $500-$1,000. I've done somewhere around 100 builds (in person), so we can set up whatever you are looking for. In the last group I played with, I walked a guy through building it and it worked perfect. I would also recommend you get Windows 7 64-bit at this point. Students can get it for ~$30 right now.
  7. This guy is either crazy, or crazy awesome. I'm not sure. There is nothing like an "Oh Shit!" moment out in the woods. Gotta love references to the Marines. And for the ladies out there.
  8. I have heard that this can be related to the path that your game is in. Are you in c:\program files\steam\ or c:\program files(x86)\steam? Have you downloaded any recent sound drivers through Windows Update? This has been a problem in the past.
  9. I'm thinking a webcast.....

  11. Just a historical correction. Christianity (and Judaism) in Iraq pre-dates Islam. Both of those religions have been in Iraq for over 1900 years. Islam has only been around since 636 AD when the Persians were defeated by the Arabs at the Battle of Al-Qadisiyyah.
  12. Good deal. Glad to hear you are back up and running with it.
  13. So, just to make sure I understand, its a wired connection, right? What model of router do you have? Does it have a Version number as well? Which operating system are you using? You may have some bad DNS tables. I would drop into your c:\ (type cmd in the run thingy), and type ipconfig /flushdns. If this doesn't take care of it, we'll go into some deeper stuff like ensuring your configuration is good for you network interface.
  14. Do you know which settings are problematic? Have you tried using a different codec in Vent?
  15. Using two anti-virus programs is definately not a good thing to do, IF both of them are staying active. You really could consolidate into 1 AV program and malwarebytes. Try it, you'll love it. For the record, malwarebytes has replaced spybot, adaware, hijackthis!, and Windows Defender for me. Its simply amazing.
  16. ccleaner is crap cleaner. I used it back before they went with a more "acceptible" name.
  17. First off, you get crap on your systems. It happens. You install a program, you uninstall a program. You get layer upon layer of crap. So how do we get rid of this crap? Well, I use Crap Cleaner. This can actually take a few minutes, but its worth it. Just know that it can delete all of your cookies, so you may have to log into a couple of websites from time to time. But as it cleans through your registry, its worth it. And you can choose to not let delete your cookies. Crap Cleaner at Majorgeeks.com The next thing I find important to have is a better disk optimization program. The one that comes with Windows is fine and dandy, but there are better options out there. My favorite is Auslogics Disk Defrag. It has two modes: defragement and defragrament w/ optimize. Run this once a week (once a month for you lazy bastards out there), and things that can often get fragmented (like DODS maps), will no longer have this issue. Auslogics Disk Defrag Okay, so you fucked up and you have a problem. You hit the gay animal porn site, and now mom is going to find out because you keep getting an Ashton Kutcher look-a-like "standing behind" a sheep that keeps baa-ing. Its fine. We've all been there. Well, not really, but your predeliction for Old MacDonald's 4-H entry is something between you and Flossy the Sheep. So how do you get rid of the embarrassing stuff? Well, folks, there isn't a magic bullet out there, but there is something damn close. Its called Malwarebytes and I haven't found anything it can't get rid of yet. When I worked in a college and students would bring me their unusable computers, it could fix any issue with virii, trojans, or worms. Think you might have a problem? Run it. It takes a couple of hours, so maybe run it overnight. Malware Bytes Finally, you got your computer 7 months ago and guess what? Your anti-virus is expired. Those bastards! How dare they pull this sort of crap. Is this a bait and switch? Feeling screwed? Well, quit bending over and taking it from the trojans. There is some very good anti-virus software out there. Believe it or not, the highest rated free software out there right now is made by Microsoft. I am not going to tell you that your Anti-Virus is bad (unless it is) or that you need to switch to MS. I prefer Microsoft's AV over every paid product but NOD32 and Kaspersky. I hear great things about Norton 360, but I have not used it yet. If you want a good AV that is not a resource hog, Microsoft Security Essentials is worth a try. Microsoft Security Essentials
  18. I think I will. And while its true that the GTX 295 was horrible for Source games, there was a driver release that I believe fixed it. Its the whole SLI-on-a-stick thing that creates headaches. I'll go find an app now.
  19. Heat is a VERY BIG DEAL with all the dual-gpu cards out there. I would download something like hwmonitor to see how hot it is getting. Run the program and see how hot it is running and let me know the temperatures (Celsius is best). When was the last time you dusted out your case? With high end video cards, you need high end maintanance. I'd get a can of compressed air and a vacuum and blow the whole thing out. Make sure that your front fans are are clear as well as the video card iteself. DO NOT BLOW IT OUT TO WHERE ANY LIQUID COMES OUT OF THE CAN. Always keep the can as vertical as possible. I know of these cards hitting 99 degrees C, which isn't safe, simply because they were dusty. The trick here is that dust acts as an insulator over your components. If dust is sitting on your stuff, that means air isn't moving across the surface to remove the heat like its supposed to. From what I can tell, that is a driver Version 197.45. We are currently on Version 258.96. It has had a bunch of improvements in these drivers, particuarly for SLI setups (like yours). Go download some new drivers, too. You'll like it. New Vista/Win7 32bit drivers for Nvidia
  20. I have an issue where when I first load DODS, I cannot join a server. If I refresh my favorites until it populates, I join with no problem. It may or may not help for you.
  21. Which drivers are you using? Which OS? 32 or 64 bit? Also, do you have any skins loaded? The most recent version of the nVidia drivers is 258.96. I'd make sure you have updated to the most recent version (uninstalling your prior version per the nVidia release notes). Because its an SLI on a stick card, you may want to check to see if you can adjust the profile for the card in your nVidia control panel. You may be able to tweak it. Also, are you sure that you are crashing due to the video card? IIRC, there are crash logs/debug logs. When I get home from work, I'll see if I can find a path to them. They might tell us where the problem is.
  22. Personally, I am both an organ donor and blood donor (when I can - its complicated). I figure that unless my wife suddenly gets into ancient Egyptian religions, my organs will not be stuffed into canopic jars. When I'm done with them, someone should use them.
  23. I've played with/against bobson and he's clean. The thing to remember is that in non-realism competition, you get a ton of call outs over ventrillo. And those specs will be able to 3rd person observe. As people die, you get more eyes on the game. I can't tell how many times I've had people yelling at me for not seeing someone who wasn't yet in my line of sight. Check out the videos on youtube of FragDODS. There are some excellent players out there. If you can see a video of Bearden, he's the best heavy I've ever seen. Bungles is a tremendous player as well. Here is a guy I played with for 3 years: Krimit Krimit on FragDODS channel at Youtube I'm not sure if you go through the CAL videos if you'll see me or not.
