I just want to pick on this silly little quote. To be a member of any society one must give up certain freedoms in exchange of certain securities, that's the founding principle of the social survival of the human race. If you want to live out in the wilderness, alone, fine you can do what you want. But I'm guessing we've all ready (maybe) Locke and Rousseau in high school, and hopefully most of us can identify the fault in Franklin's logic there. Actually, as the resident Russian scholar, in the war years the homeland was referred to as both отечество (literally fatherland) and родина (land of birth). The latter is feminine and thus CAN be translated as motherland, but отечество was used in more military contexts so, while both are correct, fatherland is MORE correct
