What headset do you own and what audio drivers are you using? Have you been able to test another headset with your PC? Or vice-versa? Do you have front and back audio jacks on your PC? If so try switching your headset from one to the other. I don't know what troubleshooting steps O'Hare took you through, so apologies if you been asked these questions already.
