Death in Sports

Today another member of the hockey community passed away. Wade Belak joins Rick Rypien and Derek Boogaard as the third NHL enforcer to die this offseason. The details of Belak's death are currently unknown. Rypien death is presumed to be suicide as he was dealing with severe depression that had sidelined him for half of two full seasons. Boogaard died after overdosing on Oxycontine and alcohol.

A question I have now is, what do other leagues do to help there players? It is tragic that three fierce competitors have been forever removed from the game but these problems can not be unique to hockey.

yeah its been a rough offseasons for the nhl i think the nhl should do somthing to support there players off the ice.

That's an interesting question to be posed.

I do wonder what other sports do, I know football players tend to go into depression upon retiring - especially when their body begins to quit (hard to walk, using canes, etc). But, I'm not sure why Hockey is prone to such things.

It just seems an odd pairing... NHL & Depression... what possible factors could contribute? It's got me thinking...

Today a Russian jet carrying KHL hockey team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl crashed just after takeoff Wednesday, killing 43 people, including head coach Brad McCrimmon, and leaving two others critically injured. The team was to play Thursday against Dynamo Minsk in the opening game of the KHL season. All players from the main roster plus four from the youth team were on board the aircraft, which caught fire and crashed shortly after take-off.
