Question

Posted

I'm looking for a good All-In-One instant messaging program. I have gtalk, Yahoo IM, Windows Live, AIM, etc. I just want one program that would handle them all.

I've looked at:

Trillian

Pidgin

Meebo

But I cannot decide between the three, there's probably more, but those were the big names. I could download each of them to test them out, but that's too much work. I just want to download one and be done with it. Suggestions?

Been using Trillian at work for a while now, works for what I need it to do, so yeah it's a good one. I know it's a little thing, but Trillian has a nice feature that you only have to highlight text to copy it. Great for lazy people who like to send links to each other.

I like Pidgin - open source, routinely updated, lightweight footprint, no bloat.

Perhaps it's changed but Trillian always struck me as bloated. I also used to have issues with file transfers and such with Trillian (back in the day). Pidgin has a really active development team so far as I can tell and they update pretty frequently so it's nice. But Trillian always seemed a bit 'bloated' for my taste and pidgin seems much more responsive for me. Also works on cross platform (IIRC).

Meebo? Do they have a desktop application for handling that stuff? Last I checked it was simply a browser based solution? I used it - on rare occasions - at one job where I wanted to message people but do so discretely so my boss wouldn't notice.

I just go with Pidgin - simple to install, upgrades are simple (and decent support), low bloat and works effectively.

Have you looked at Raptr?

It's targeted towards gamers, allowing you to link up your account with things like xBox live and the like, get news feeds to your styles of games, IM integration with pretty much all other IM programs, etc.

You guys should check it out.

Once you create an account on the website and setup your profile, download the client (the IM thingy) and sign in. I like that from within the IM you can launch, from the looks of it, any game on your computer, even ventrilo. It also shows you what games your friends are currently playing, even if it is a non-steam games like League of Legends. Yes, it has LoL support for all you die-hards out there.

"Part Twitter, part Steam community, and part Facebook, Raptr is a social network that gives gamers a place to connect with one another over the games they frequently play"

You guys should check out XFire. It has all the aspects that vent has, plus more. You can record in-game videos, take pictures and what-not. Massive online community, great support, plus supports all games that are installed on your comp. Apparently you can have it support Runescape, which is an internet-browser game. But, I have yet to figure it out. It's fucking awesome. I'll post up my profile link when I get home.. some wicked funny pics I made on Gary's mod.
