Name: Parker, B.

Rank: Lt. Col.

Type of issue: Steam

Brief Description of Issue: I never had any issues with FPS until lately and I don't know why. I use to get close to 300 FPS and now I'm getting 30. There are no programs running in the background or anything like that, I don't have an auto exec file, and my computer is very capable of producing 300 fps. When I'm in game it feels choppy and it shouldn't.

For your computer to have such a drastic change in FPS, there must have been some change to the system.

You are sure nothing has changed that you are aware of since last it worked correctly? (installed new software, new drivers, etc)

Are programs like windows update running, or your anti-virus doing a scan?

I give these steps to everyone who has FPS issues, as it is often the most basic, and common problem. Clean your computer. Inside and out.

By this, I mean taking the case of your computer, clearing it of dust. Make sure it is in a well ventilated area.

Then, clean the "inside". There are multiple things you should look into. Firstly, go into your control panel (start >> control panel), and press "add/remove programs" ("programs and features" for Windows 7).

Many of those programs that are taking up space on your hard drive, that are never used. Well, those are in fact making an impact on your computers performance, whether they are currently active or not.

After you have picked through your installed programs, go into the "run" prompt (start >> run), and type msconfig into the box, and press OK.

Once the window comes up, go to the "Services" tab. These list the extensions to many programs that are mostly always running, regardless of its master program's state. Disable any services that are related to things you do not use. If you do not know what a service does, google it before you disable it. You would disable things like "Bing Bar Update Service" for example, if you do not care for the "bing bar" on Internet Explorer.

After the services, go to your "Startup" tab. These are all the programs that start up by default when you log into your system. There should be very few programs here, excluding your OS necessities and antivirus. Keep in mind, removing a program off the list will NOT make it un-usable. It will only cause it to stop starting up on it's own, and will require user input (launching the executable) to run. For example, the "ITunes" is not a program I need to start up automatically, so I disable it.

Restart your computer, and see if there is any improvement. It may not be back to the way it once was, but any improvement is good.

Tell me how it goes for you, and any future questions can be posted here. Alternatively, contact me via steam or vent, and I would be more than willing to give you more live support.
