Question

Posted

Name: Magoo, S.

Rank: Warrant Officer

Type of issue: (Hardware)

Brief Description of Issue: Right now my computer is on and working fine with no signs of a problem. However, if I turn it off there is a chance that it will not turn on again. When I try to start my comp I hear a click and nothing happens. If I take the side off I can see that there is a blue light on my motherboard that is blue and when I press the button an orange light also turns on. But still nothing happens. So then I remove the power plug from the back and the motherboard and the lights go off and if I wait about 5 mins and plug the power cord back in the computer sometimes starts. It took a while to get it going today. Right now there is a blue, orange, and green light lit on the motherboard. I'm not sure if this is a power supply issue or something else.

What brand is the motherboard? The model you listed is only the chipset not the specific motherboard.

I have no idea. They only list the chipset in the documentation. I tried looking at the motherboard but there is no info on it that I can see. I can't start pulling my computer apart because I am not confident that I will be able to get it back together. Thanks for the help anyway.

Does your motherboard look like this?

If so, this is the bios update for your board

http://www.evga.com/support/download/showd...ber=132-CK-NF79

P10 only adds CPU support, so if you're running P9 I wouldn't bother updating the bios (it should tell your your bios version before you give it the go ahead to install the new bios. If you're running anything older than P9 then an update to P10 could help, but it's hard to know since EVGA isn't showing the change log for older bioses.

As with all bios updates, use extreme caution during the update, an interruption can brick your board.

Yes, that is it. And what type of interruptions are you talking about? Like a power outage or like a virus scan?

Like a power interruption. The bios update options only work on a fresh boot before windows has loaded, so no virus scanner worries

The link I provided has instructions. I've updated dozens of bioses and never had a problem, but one of my friends powered off his PC somehow while updating and had to have his bios chip removed from the board (with a soldering iron), reflashed, and soldered back on.... it was a nightmare. So don't turn the machine off during the process.
