Just was victim of CRUEL prank

Someone gained access to my FB and posted a status saying that I had killed myself earlier tonight and to call my phone for details on the memorial. It was at 5am my time, but fortunately that is 7pm Japan time, where I have many friends who were on FB. They woke me up with their phone calls and I was able to talk to FB and get access back fairly fast, but plenty of people were seriously shook up over it.

They also accessed my gmail, which as you well know, keeps track of all IPs that log into your account. So I have that, and after a little investigation, have found either the dumbest person ever, or a computer that the prankster used as a proxy to do the deed.

I'm still not sure how they got access; perhaps through unsecured wireless connections I was using today due to my family emergency. My home network is damn secure and the passwords themselves are each 40+ randomized digits, so bruteforce is out of the question.

Anyways, just thought I'd make a post in case anyone here saw it and thought I was dead. I can assure you I am not. Well, pretty sure. Like 75%. Also, if anyone can think of any other possible ways one could have gotten access, let me know. I'm going with using unsecured wireless at the moment, only logical thing that makes sense; however, this would mean that whoever is responsible should not be so dumb as to access my gmail without a proxy of some sort, yet the IP is a local resident, so maybe trojan on their computer and remote access? Hrmm...

Venting done, still seething with rage though. GRR.

wow thats not even a prank. Thats actually fucked up. I would say do more research on that IP address and figure out if its a proxy or the true person. Then figure out what you want to do from there. But remember if you pull any kind of ass hole stunt on them, are you better or worse than they are?

Is there any law about doing that shit? I know that in a normal(more less) country as Germany you can sue a person for emotional distress. If you cant they i suggest a virus so he will know that he shouldnt touch you anymore.

Though the intention was good, the thought is rediculous.

There is little to legally be done, unless you have a significant amount of free time and money to persue it.

Unless personal information has been taken, considering it was an action against an individual and not a group, likely without bias, it is generally classified as vandalism.

Furthermore, I highly doubt this community wants to get involved with the discussion of or distribution of milacious software. If that is the kind of topic that interests you, there are countless well-equiped communities elsewhere that can help you.

Agreed completely on every point, and I've spent the day biking around, eating frozen yogurt, talking to the cute jewelry ladies at the mall, and I have come to a number of conclusions.

First off, there is very little legal action I can take. Not only does this happen thousands of times a day on Facebook, but even if I do have the IP and time and money, there is still no case to make. I am sure that some of you remember Judge Gary Brown's decision in May of this year officially creating the precedent that an IP does not constitute a person (info here). While that was created more in concern of copyright law, it still applies to this scenario.

Also, I never asked for ideas on how to get the guy/girl/amoeba back you guys, you should know better than to recommend illegal things on this forum (as should I)! Sure, I said I wanted to blow him up, but I am obviously not going to do that; it is just a natural reaction to such a vicious attack on one's personal life. GIO is right in this regard though, retaliation would not make me any better than him/her/it. Besides, I think it is safe to say that if this person has to resort to these acts in order to amuse themselves, their life is already miserable.

Finally, while he did hurt a lot of people for about an hour or so, everyone was extremely relieved to discover that I was not dead, and this whole process actually brought me closer to some friends who I had not spoken to in a long time. I was even invited to spend some time in Australia by the family of my best friend from high school (who was like a 2nd family to me back then), all expense paid. We chatted on skype for the first time in 15 years. In a weird way, I actually owe this prankster a little gratitude (very little bit, mind you...probably could have achieved a similar outcome without the dramatic bullshit scare).

SO, in conclusion, please don't recommend illegal things on the forum or in this thread, no I will not be retaliating (even though I have a good idea who it was), and I am still pretty sure I am not dead. Sorry this was so long and drawn out, but it seemed like this thread was headed towards a bad place and that is the last thing I want out of it. I really just wanted to share the story, see if anyone had any insight into how it could have happened, and vent a bit. Thank you, though, for reading and listening and letting me get all this out. It has been one hell of a day, and is now time to virtually simulate shooting people in the face : ) Hugs all around! Except Quarterman. No hugs for him.
