Question

Name: Yamagata

Rank: Major

Type of issue: Hardware/Software?

Brief Description of Issue:

I've got a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 USB Keyboard and for some reason the media buttons are acting like I press them twice (or more). It's not a serious issue, just annoying. Whenever I try to pause my music it will pause then return to playing very quickly. This happens with the 'next,' 'previous' and even the calculator key. I don't want two or three calculators open please and thank you keyboard. Doesn't happen with any other keys (that I've noticed), even the macro keys work just fine.

I've tried updating my drivers, rolling back my drivers (with keyboard plugged in and not), and ignoring the issue completely.

Anyways, all those solutions have not helped and I am about ready to give up and look for a new keyboard.

Any ideas?

I had an issue with a keyboard like this (but I can't for the bloody life of me remember what it was called) and after similar exercises in futility (driver rolling, anti-dusting/cleaning between keys despite it being new) I ended up deciding it was due to USB limitations while attempting to process faulty "anti-ghosting" technology (info here )that these gaming keyboards now use. I wrote Microsoft about the issue and while they never actually conceded that there was a problem at all, eventually they actually sent me shipping label to return it. After a couple weeks, got a brand new one with no issues (either that, or the one I sent to them but fixed and repackaged). I could never find a thread about it in any forum though, nor anyone reporting similar problems, but since they sent me a new one, I can only imagine it was/is a known issue. This was maybe 6 months ago.

I'd say if you've tried all the logical steps (sounds like it), blame fancy yet faulty new tech and ask for a new one (hey, it worked for me)

The only tip I got was to talk to the manufacturer. Is that all you guys got for me?

Test the keyboard on another computer first, to isolate the problem.

Check all available keyboard settings, including those that may be found in the driver software, along with the windows keyboard tools via the control panel. I cannot provide much further detail into what to look for, as for lack of personal knowledge in the matter.

I could suggest a fresh driver install (complete removal, then re-installation), however I have doubts that it will accomplish much of anything other than spending your time. Try it as a last resort.

I apologize on behalf of the office if this was of little help to you, however with no way to reproduce the situation, no personal or extended experience with the problem, and no source to turn to for information, along with the presumption that nothing occured to bring about the situation (the keyboard being impacted, a spill, etc) I must, with great dissatisfaction, refer to a product defect, which is best resolved by contacting the manufacturer.
