Question

Im having mad screen resolution problems. With my current monitor, it says the recommended screen resolution is 1920x1080, but iwhen i have it set to that, there are black lines around the edge of my screen (so it doesnt fill up the whole screen) When i set it to the one that does fill the screen, 1600x900, things look a little weird, but more than that none of my games resolutions work properly.

Im trying to launch and play Civ V, and i cant get a screen resolution that even allows me to see everything in game without having major mouse calibration problems. Anyone have any ideas what i can do?

Are you connecting your monitor with a HDMI cable? If so it may be a scaling issue. Reply back with the answer to that first question and with which kind of video card you have (nvidia/amd).

Yes it is connected with an HDMI cable. I have an AMD Radeon HD 6800 graphics card (btw, an assessment of how good this video card is now would be appreciated :)

My video card requires either an HDMI hook up or a DVI connector, but my monitor only has HDMI/VGA ins. Qould is possibly fix my problem if i bought a DVI to VGA adaptor?

Ya this is just a scaling issue, it's quite common with HDMI connected monitors and won't require you to buy anything else.

Howto fix:

1. Open your catalyst control center. To do this you can search for it in your start menu or just right click your desktop and click open catalyst control center.

2. Once it loads select the tab on the left titled "My Digital Flat-Panels".

3. Within that tab then select "Scaling Options (Digital Flat-Panel)".

4. There you should see a slide bar under "Scaling Options" that goes from underscan to overscan. Move that slide bar all the way to the right (overscan) and the value should read 0%.

5. Click apply and close the catalyst control center.

This should eliminate the bar around your monitor, if not let me know and I'll look into it. As for your video card, a 6800 is one of the upper level cards (not quite top of the line) from the Radeon 6000 series. They have since released their 7000 series which has more power than your card. However, yours is still more than good for most games from the last couple years with max settings and should take on the newer games with medium settings no problem. I currently run a 6770 and I am pretty happy with it.

Awesome! Thanks alot Rather! That definitely fixed it.

My real concern with my video card is being able to run the new Total War game efficiently. Thats the issue i always come across. Ive purchased two video cards over the last 5 years so i can run those games :P You think investing in a 7000 series would be worthwhile?

Your card will definitely run Rome II, just not on max settings. What kind of processor do you have? If you want to play it with the highest settings possible you would probably need a higher level 7000 series card or something like a Nvidia 680. But if you just want to play it then you'll be good with he card you have.

I have an intel core i7 3.07 ghz. Not sure how good this is either, but i expect its about average. I have no problems running anything on my computer truth be told, i can max out the settings on Shogun Total War 2, which i think is the most demanding game i have.
