I'm looking to get a MIG welder and would like some recommendations for something cheap $200.

Flux Core Gasless too.

I need something that has enough power to weld at least the thickness of the firewall of my Mustang.

Thanks. I'd figure I'd ask here first...

I have wanted to get into welding - currently I don't do any.

Good buddy of mine is a steel-worker (owns his own steel company); he told me to go with Miller or Lincoln MIG welders and that used for a decent one would probably be $300.

I know it's a little out of your price range but one of those brands would probably do exactly what you wanted and if you watch craigslist or ebay closely you might be able to snag one.

Thanks! Yeah my research showed me that too.

I think I'll settle for a Harbor Freight one to learn on and do to the little welding I need done for now. Then upgrade later on.

OR I might get a steal of a deal on CL, I'll have to check. Thanks.

I too, thought about the Harbor Freight direction. Cheap, and learnable. But from what I had read it was just too sketchy to really make me pull the trigger. From people saying it didn't get hot enough to having theirs break after a few uses. I decided to just save my cash.

If I ever need one, I can go get one. But as for now, I'd rather just wait for the 'right time'.

Let me know how the Harbor Freight version works out - I'm totally curious.

Just did some welding with it today. I bought a 90A Flux Core welder, on the cheap for $80 with a coupon.

This thing does have plenty of power for general welding. I melted through the metal of my fender aprons, but that was my fault too high wire speed.

I repaired some cracks in the car frame nicely and also welded together some of the improperly repaired damage from a previous accident, where the metal was about 1/4th in. thick and it penetrated well without turning the wire speed all the way. I would say it would be too powerful for body work, but for general welding like small projects and mufflers, it would work well. Hope this helps sir! :D
