Russia's handling of the Sochi Games

After what I have seen of Russia's "preparations" for these game it is obvious that they should have chosen another location or another country all together. Russia has handled this very poorly and by putting the event in the middle of the most terrorist filled part of the world they have put thousands of peoples lives in jeopardy. Hell the games haven't even started here in the U.S. or just barely and people are already trying to force there way into the "ring of steel" by attempting to hijack planes with bombs.

There construction of most of the "hotels" in the region is not complete yet, other Olympic buildings aren't ready yet. This to me is Russia's plan to win the games this time around, make living conditions so horrible for every other nation rather than there own to make it so Russia has the most sleep/least amount of stress during the games.

I have no clue as to why the I.O.C. picked Russia to hold the games this time around but after what I have seen, I hope they never get another one. Hell China, didn't have this kind of an issue in 2008 and I would have expected it from them but not the Russians. Hell, Greece had better accommodations in 2004 on the brink of economic collapse than Russia for the winter games.

It is stupid to think we have put our own athletes at risk for these games, telling them not to wear any Team USA material outside the Olympic Housing and to not wear there medals (if we win any). This to me is a complete lack of planning by the Russian government, and it shows.

What do you guys think of Russia's handling of the games so far? Is it above or below your Olympic expectations?

Nope it seems that they even fucked up the opening ceremony.

The snowflakes were suppose to expand into the five Olympic rings, the last one was having none of it.

I believe the bet was everything? I'll pm you my address. Give me your stuff. :P Told ya things were gonna fuck up during the ceremony. This years Olympics is turning out to be a joke and I feel sorry for the athletes that have to endure the BS. I agree with you Griswold, I didn't want to believe stuff like this would happen at first, but once I started reading into it then it just became obvious and disappointing. How are athletes from other nations supposed to compete when they are pretty much at a kiddy fun land version of The Gulag?

I could spend days talking about how this is a very popular attitude because of the decades-long conflict the USA had with the USSR, and how there's loads of Schadenfreude at seeing a long-time rival screw up. American media have had a field day pointing out everything that goes wrong, and you better believe they're picking every little thing apart moreso than they have for any other Olympic competition -including the one that was held in a city where people need masks to go outside because the air is so fucking polluted.

Of course there are issues with these Olympics, of course there is corruption, the threat of terrorism, and last-minute preparations. These problems that have occurred at tons of Olympics over the years. Does that excuse them? No, of course not, but do Americans take more joy from Russia's failures than others, yes.

I don't like Vladimir Putin: I think he's a tyrant, a bully, and I think the way he's able to play on Russians' fears and convictions to get what he wants is disturbing to say the least. But I sympathize with the Russian people, many of whom are immensely proud of these Olympics, and I'm annoyed at how blatantly so much American coverage is massively biased against the host country.

Yeah and also what did they have? Around 40000 Russian soldiers placed in and around Sochi and the US got two cruisers currently on stand by in the black sea. Its like they are preparing for war, but that is the current today you can never be too careful when terrorists are walking around ready to blow up anytime.
