Brief Description of Issue:

Upon booting up my Toshiba Laptop I'm just getting a black screen of death... Tried looking up a few quick tips but no luck so far... Having to smartphone communicate ATM... Any ideas boffins?

Do you have any monitors you can hook up to it?

Please describe the "black screen of death". Do you see any text on the screen? Do any logos come up? Do any lights flash on the system anywhere?

What was happening before the crash? Any symptoms that you can elaborate on?

While you answer these questions please unplug the power cable and remove the battery from the system. Wait 20 seconds and then replace the battery and then plug the power cord back in. Please let me know if anything changes by doing that.

I logged off last night after watching netflix. Came on today you get the toshiba logo and the safe console start up options (with networking, with prompt as normal etc) it boots but then goes to a black screen with pointer and nothing else

Sorry it's a windows 7, toshiba satellite p850-12z, core i7. I've tried removing the battery/power and booting in safe modes but it all leads to same black screen

I would attempt to load the "Last Known Good Configuration". Please follow the steps below:

If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by shutting down and restarting your computer.

If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start, and then press F8.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration (advanced), and then press Enter.

Sadly it's not made a blind bit of difference so I may end up replacing the unit on insurance I have on it.

Usually when we see that at my work, we have to re-install the OS. Although, that means you would lose all your personal info...

Yeah there wasn't masses of personal info on there and the insurance should cover it. Worst comes to worst I end up with two machines it's just the inconvenience now and forcing my hand to take a LOA :/

That or Ubuntu Linux live DVD to copy files to a USB drive. Just depends on your computer comfort level Lloyd.

I've sorted it with a reinstall of windows but lost a bit of data...including some work towards the next newsletter but I'll get back on it. I posted a TDR so that I can sit and get the machine running up to speed tonight which will hopefully give me a bit more time to ensure that whatever happened does not happen again. Bit gutted I missed the realisms but Im sure the Germans will be back for another drubbing at some point.
