Question

Name:J. Samuels

Rank:SSgt

Type of issue: (Software, Hardware, Steam, Not sure) Hardware/Not Sure

Brief Description of Issue:So here's my problem...... I am currently connecting to the internet via my universities network using a Ethernet cable. The computer will connect to the network, which then leads to a log in page when opening a browser. After signing in to the page, it will then notify me that I am connected to the internet, but my computer will somehow disconnect from the current network and change to a public network which doesn't let me access the internet.

So anyone got any idea how to fix something like this potentially?

Do you have win 7 or 8? Try setting the university network as the "auto-connect in the future" connection. Im not a medical supply clerk but i had this problem a couple yrs ago.

I am running Windows 7. My computer recognizes the "Network" (as it's listed on the computer and it is identified as a Work network) when the Ethernet cable is connected. While it is connected to this, I do have the ability to log on to the network's sign-in page and it will notify me that I'm connected. After which it will change to "Unidentified network" and listed as a public network. It will not let me change the network from its public status on my computer or allow me to identify or configure it

PS. I know very little in regard to Windows 7 so the simpler the better

Try running the Microsoft "Fix it" in the resolution section of this link that details Windows 7 connections always coming up in Public mode:

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2578723

Did you have a chance to try this yet Samuels?

Hi Samuels, please let me know if this fix worked or if the issue is still occurring. I will be closing the ticket tomorrow if there is no further response.

I know I'm not an MSO tech but this has happened to me before. If I remember correctly you have to go into your network settings and change it so that it is listed as a home network.

I am not a MSO tech, but I have a feeling I know the issue.

This sounds like the university is using a captive portal network system to "corral" a user into a designated subnet (set of IP addresses) and then once authenticated (ie. logged in) the subnet will change (ie. your ip address will change) to the the university's trusted network. This causes confusion within the Windows firewall as it appears as an entirely different network and puts it into the "public network" category.

Under the public network category, the Firewall permissions are much more restricted. Can you try temporarily disabling the Windows firewall and see if that remedies your issue? If it does, then you will need to re-enable the firewall and change your connection from "Public" to "Work" when on the university's trusted network.

See how to disable/enable Windows Firewall:

Turn Windows Firewall on or off

See Microsoft's Tech on changing network locations from public to work:

Choosing a network location

Hope this helps. Cheers! :D

That sounds exactly like the problem Blue, but turning off the firewall for both public and private/work networks did nothing. It still changes to an unidentified network, and I cannot seem to change it to a different one

Hmm, so let me get this straight. You get no internet whatsoever when it goes to the unidentified network after logging in? If that is the case, then sounds like IT at the university needs to get involved, as I am out of ideas. Maybe their network needs additional configuration in order to work.

I believe that there is a problem on my end, because using the same cable I can connect to the same network using Mac's and other laptops/PCs. It just seems to be on my end.

Is there any possible way to identify the network and change its settings without changing the firewall?

This is the way to change it that Blue Saber posted:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...n#1TC=windows-7

You tried this and it did not change the type? Assuming you have IT Support that is easily accessible there at the school it is worth it to have them take a look at your system as well.

To help with debugging please do the following.

get to the login page, but do not log in.

open a command prompt (press the windows key and type cmd)

type:

ipconfig /all

press enter

right click in the window and choose select all, the window colours will invert

press enter

open notepad or word or something and paste the contents of the clip board

log into your university network so that it changes to public

repeat the steps above.

copy and paste the results of each here.

I am pretty sure he is talking about the captive portal login. He is trying to see what your network address information looks like before and after you log in.

Do you have the option to speak with one of the IT staff at your school to help resolve this?

Also, I had this question that I posed earlier.
