What about a SSD for running windows and a HD for everything else? Is that not recommended for what I have?

I would recommend that. I f you have all your Windows files on an ssd then your computer will boot up a lot faster. Then you can have all your other files on the HD such as games, pictures etc. If you are in the market for a new HD then I suggest one that runs at similar or faster rpms so you don't see a decrease in speed.

An SSD would be great for your OS and core programs, you would have to re-install Windows on that drive though.. Make sure to have a good backup of anything you might need beforehand like your documents, pictures, etc

It's too late for that....r.i.p. *sobs

Ok, so ideally if I only wanted to buy a SSD for windows only...how much space should it have?

Black November on Newegg! Amazon always has sales...

This is the best time of year to buy computer parts.

You could go very minimal with your SSD and use it just for the essential programs that you want to load quick and then put the rest of your money into a nice terrabyte HDD for the rest.

If you want a top performing drive then get the Samsung 840 Pro 240GB.

If that's a little too pricey, then here's some other decent options:

Samsung 840, 840 evo

Intel 520, 525, 530

Sandisk Extreme II

Kingston HyperX 3K, SSDNow V300

If you find something else you like then post the model, size, price and I (or somebody else) can let you know if it's a decent drive.

Don't get rid of that old drive, it's possible you might be able to get some of your data through a data retrieval service or even some software programs
