Can someone help me answer this?

Toby has a farm with chickens and sheep. He has 55 more sheep than chickens, and has 135 animals total.

* How many sheep does he have

* How many chickens does he have

* Toby decides to trade some of his sheep for cows. He now has twice as many chickens as cows and 10 more sheep than cows. How many animals does Toby have now?

RESPOND WITH ANSWERS AND REASONING PWEASE

Toby has 80 sheep because:

you do 135-55= number of sheeps

minus 55 because he has 55 more sheep than chickens

that gives you the number of sheep: 80

then you do 80-55=?

because yet again he has 55 more sheep then chickens

that gives you: 35 chickens

i might be wrong i might be right i have no clue :P

gooderham is right about the first part.

since he has 55 more, you take them out: 135 - 55 = 80

then you divide the leftover in half since both sides are equal: 80/2 = 40

so since sheep are the higher total, you add the 55 back to them. that gives you 95 sheep and 40 chickens.

for the 2nd part, you use the knowledge that chickens stays the same, and then figure from there:

chickens = 40 still

he has twice as many chickens as cows which means his cows are half the chicken total. so cows = 20

he has 10 more sheep than cows, so that means he has 30 sheep.

the total number of animals he now has is 90 (40+30+20)

How did you get 27 Gooderham and try this then?

Whats perpendicular to Y=-3x + 7

try y = 3x + 7

perpendicular lines have reciprocal slopes. since your slope is -3 (the 'm' of y = mx+b equation) you just have to use a line with a slope of 3.

BRILIANT Now answer my second question

i kind of feel bad doing your math homework. but i did get my college degree in mathematics and spent several years as a math tutor when i was in college.

Jesus christ you are brilliant I love you!

so the X^2 means nothing then?

correct, the "x's" only apply if you had to fully factor the expression. the question is just asking for the common factor of all 3 terms.

if the question said to 'simplify' the expression, the answer would be much different. (i won't post it as no need to confuse things!)

I'd feel bad giving the guy the wrong answers too. Perpendicular lines have slopes of negative reciprocals. Since your slope is -3 in the above mentioned y=mx+b form, a slope of 1/3 is perpendicular.

You find the negative reciprocal by flipping the fraction and changing the sign. -3 is the same as saying -3/1. Flipping that fraction we get -1/3 , changing the sign we get 1/3 .

As for the sheep chicken question. It's a word problem and I'm guessing they'll want to see some logic.

Let x represent the number of chickens.

If we know we have 55 more sheep than chickens we know the term x + 55 = our number of sheep.

So we write out the equation we know and solve for x

Total animals = # chickens + # sheep

135 = x + (x+55)

135 - 55 = x + x + 55 - 55 (Subtract 55 from both sides)

80 = 2x (divide both sides by 2)

40 = x

Go back to your original statements, x represents chickens therefore you have 40 chickens, x + 55 represents sheep therefore you have 40+55 = 95 sheep
