I'm sorry but, which is which? haha

hahaha that was my fault. i originally sent that post from my phone and didn't think it through fully. i was referring to the pictures of the calculators posted by Cantin. it doesn't matter whether or not a calculator is in radians or degrees or the third program (never used so its not important to me currently). since the original equation does not use any form of pi, then the modes do not matter. apparently everybody was taught a different rule of thumb in this (BEDMAS, PEMDAS, or any other method) but they all follow the same pattern.

That mode indicator is relating to complex numbers, not angles. Shouldn't have that effect though.

6/2(1+2)=A

Remove the division from the operation.

so 6/2(1+2)=A

*6

2(1+2)=6A

2(3)=6A

6=6A

/6 /6

1=A.

Order of operations:

Please= Parenthasis

Excuse= Exponents

My= Multiplication (has presidence)

Dear= Division

Aunt=Adition (again has presidence)

Sally= Subtraction.

If you still doubt substitute 9 for A and watch it not work, ever.

Edit:

6/2(1+2)=A

6/2(3)=A

/3 /3

6/2=A/3

3=A/3

*3 *3

9=A

the only way it works for nine is if you breake the order of operations by balancing after you solve the parenthasis, which in and of itself unbalances the equation.

Sorry Marsden, but Multiplication and Division have the same precedence. In cases of conflicts, they are resolved left to right, as a source i've previously mentioned confirms. Same for addition and substraction.

Furthermore, parentheses are always resolved first, even before exponents.

In your example:

6/2(1+2)=A

6/2 * 3 =A

Now we go left to right as division and multiplication have the same priority.

6/2=3

3 * 3=A

9=A

EDIT: I suggest reading the Memnonics section in the wikipedia article.

Interestingly what you've written as breaking the order of operations is a correct solution, you haven't broken any rules. Your earlier multiplication by 6 is incredibly wrong. First of all, you're assuming that A/B*C means A/(B*C), which is the general mistake everyone is making. But that ignored, you are writing that A/B = C can be multiplied by A to produce B = AC.... if you multiply A/B=C by A you get A^2/B = AC. If you divide by A, you could get 1/B = C/A.... or 1/(2(1+2)) = A/6.... not sure why you would want to do that, but it would be valid... assuming the extra parentheses required to make your interpretation correct.

The bottom line is that A/B*C does NOT indicate

A

-----

B*C

It indicates

A

-- * C

B
