Early morning madness

So today I woke up at 6 in the morning by my building's fire alarm and my first thought was "fuck not again." The building I live in has 50 floors and is mainly occupied by people my age so a lot of the time the fire alarm gets pulled by drunken assholes. This time, however, there was a huge fire on the 41st floor. When the alarm went off the voice of building security came on the PA and told everyone in my building to evacuate it immediately, use the stairs and that the fire department was on the way. So I got dressed and made my way to the stairs which was jammed packed with about 500 people, I live on the 24th floor so it took me about 5 minutes to get to the bottom with that amount of people. When I got to the bottom I saw about 9 fire trucks, police blockading all the streets surrounding my building, ambulances, and a black BMW with an orange tarp next to it on the sidewalk. I wasn't exactly sure what was going on but I knew something bad had happened.

At the bottom I got a call from my friend who lives on the 42nd floor (at the time we didn't know what floor the fire was on) who had already made his way downstairs with his girlfriend and into the Starbucks across the street. I met up with them at the Starbucks where there happened to be a TV showing our building on the news. They told me they were surrounded by black smoke and ran their way down the stairs as quick as they could. Luckily for me the only thing I noticed was a strong smell of smoke which surprisingly I could smell 20 floors below. While watching the news we find out the fire was on the 41st floor and that someone was killed while another was critically injured and had suffered severe smoke inhalation. The fire started from the mattress but they didn't say how, we figured he either fell asleep with a cigarette in his mouth or there were candles next to his bed. Now the assumption was that he was killed in the fire and his roommate barely survived...or so I thought.

It is now 4pm and I just heard on the news that the guy who died didn't die in the fire, he jumped from the 41st floor and and landed next to a black BMW. That tarp I saw was covering the body and at the time I thought nothing of it. Detectives are investigating whether it was suicide or murder and no other details were given. All I know is that today was one hell of a way to wake up and start the day.

Crazyness. I've only experienced two building fires. One was in 6th grade when they were re-taring the roof and someone knocked over the torch and the other was in the dorms when some pothead lit his desk on fire. (What I heard was he was playing with hand sanitizer and covered his desk in it, guess what: wood burns even better when you douse it in rubbing alcohol!)

But I can say I've never experienced a possible murder/suicide. That's intense.

Oh I will and it'll probably go off this weekend.

It was only closed off for two hours, we were able to go back in right after they put the fire out and made sure everything was A-OK.

Yup totally fine, smells a little of smoke but there was no damage to his place.
