Resolved - setting up my computer

alright so i recently fixed a computer and when i get to the windows set up it gets to the screen where it says, collecting information, dynamic update, installing windows, finalizing installation.

but before it gets to finalzing it gets stuck at installing windows, then tells me to insert the 2nd disc which i do. then a window pops up saying

"the file 'asms" on windows xp professional service pack 2 cd is needed

Type the path where the file is located then click OK"

Then i have no clue where to go from here because i dont know where the file is located..

help! thanks guys!

There are a couple of methods listed that might help.

Hard disk formatted with NTFS file system

If the hard disk is formatted with the NTFS file system and you are upgrading an earlier version of Windows, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

When you receive the error message, press SHIFT+F10 to start a command session.

Type regedit.exe, and then press ENTER.

Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

On the File menu, click Load Hive, and then load %Windir%\System32\Config\System.sav.

When you are prompted to specify a name, type Test.

Locate and then click the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Test\ControlSet1\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Delete the UPPERFILTERS and LOWERFILTERS registry keys.

Repeat steps 6 and 7 for the other ControlSet# keys under the Test hive.

Click File, and then click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

If the path in the error message is the correct drive letter for the CD-ROM drive, click OK to continue the Setup program.

If you receive the error message again, the Setup program cannot correctly read from the CD-ROM drive, or the path information is incorrect. In this case, restart your computer and let the Setup program resume.

Method 2

If you cannot start Regedit.exe at the command prompt, and there is another available partition where you can install Windows on the hard disk, follow these steps:

Install Windows in the other partition.

Start the new installation of Windows, and then start Regedit.exe.

Follow the steps in method 1, but load the System.sav hive from the original Windows folder.

Method 3

If you are not using a retail Windows XP CD-ROM with a hologram (for example, if you are using a burned CD-ROM), try to run the Setup program from a retail CD-ROM with a hologram. To verify this, start the computer by using Recovery Console, and then check the C:\$win_nt$.~ls folder. Look for the Asms folder. If the folder is missing or the files that it contains are zero bytes, the CD-ROM was not burned correctly.

Looking at Method 3, are you using a burned copy of the disc (incidentally this is not illegal, so long as your license key is valid)? If you are, its apparently possible to get this message. If you can't get hold of an original, or a better copy, you might have to try one of the other 2 methods listed.

i do not have the service pack 2 cd

i do have a valid license key

i was in fact just curious if i could download the service pack from microsoft offline onto a external hard drive, but then once i got to the screen the hard drive couldnt be found (the hard drive)

oh and btw the Windows cd i am using did come with the computer so i am not sure why..

i have made it to the main desktop area, but i tried clicking onto the internet but it said there was a file or something missing it was something like this i878.dll file missing i am not sure about the file name but the ex was .dll

so basically once i hit the desktop i cant do anything

ok i have managed to make it to the windows screen the only issue now is that i cant connect to the internet.

the cord are all hooked up properly is there a step i am missing?

You could be missing the driver for your network card, alternatively it sounds like you had some severe issues with your installation, you may not have the network subsystem entirely installed.

If you check device manager and there are unknown devices and no network card listed, then get a network card driver.

Otherwise I would suggest that you find proper installation media for your product key and try starting over.

So I did re install everything didn't have any of the issues I had before but I still can't connect to the Internet it says your Ethernet router is disconnected (when its not) I will look for the driver. I did take the computer apart so I possibly could of forgotten a piece.

Specific network drivers are one of the things that often aren't included in windows XP installs...

Typically, you'll have a seperate network driver disc (or it'll be part of the motherboard driver disc normally included with a purchased mobo/pc system).

If you've tried again and got a good install, and its only your network driver missing, then you should be on the home stretch.

If you find the driver disc, and it all works, great! If not, let us know again, and we can take another look.

Its possible that your XP disc is fucked, but its usually no problem to get hold of another copy and still use your original key, so if needed we can probably

help you with that.

Just open the device manager and see if you have an unknown device and no network adapter.

If that's what you find then all you need is a driver. Depends what sort of network card or motherboard you have what driver you'll need.

I'm a little bit anal retentive about verbal accuracy, and I can never say "will" and "definately" even if I'm 99.9% sure about something!

When I have worked as a programmer, it makes my coworkers absolutely furious. Conversation usually goes like this:

Me:---- "Oh... I've got a little snippet of code that does basically what you want... I'll send it to you."

Them:- "Did you test the code and will it work?"

Me:---- "Well, it never went through a rigourous test, but I've been using it in this little tool for months and its not broken yet... its probably fine, but you should test it before deploying to a live environment."

Them:- "Probably? I don't like the sound of that, are you 100% sure?"

Me:---- "No... like I said, I only use it in this tool, but it basically works... take it and test it, and you can be sure."

Them:- "Basically? I don't like the sound of that.... I'll go and write my own code."

Me:---- "Suit yourself."

Ungrateful fuckers never want to test the code, so they spend fucking days writing something almost identical (but usually with more bugs in) just because I wouldn't test it for them!

its a good way to cover your hind end in case it doesnt work. haha then they cant hold you completely liable, but i didnt even notice it lol i just trust that you guys know what you're talking about since i have little to no clue
