I think that for the most part people are aware that this vote is not meant to hurt feelings. This is a mix between popularity contest and a way to goof on your unit buddies. Every now and then someone gets nominated that has a really thin skin and gets offended by this vote, but that happens to few and far between to justify closing this down.

My advice is to try to have a sense of humor when it comes to things like this.
