Day 14

Good morning. Today was the first time I heard that in the past few weeks. Stone woke me up this morning with a “Good Morning Mottola”. He woke me up to discuss the plan of attack on the airfield. We setup a map on the hood of the Humvee and marked key locations where armor could be. We mark the two hangers and the roads outside the airfield. We sent Marsden and Jock to scout the airfield. They take up a position on the north east side of the airfield. The hill there provides cover, along with their ghillie suits and allows them to stay concealed. In an hour and a half we get the radio call that there is a T-90 tank by the hangers and roadblocks set up. At this point we realize that the tank must be taken out first. We don’t have any anti-tank weapons so this would be nearly impossible. However, Takel reminds us that we have one satchel charge left. With that in mind I came up with an idea. We would infiltrate the airfield through the western woods. From there one of us could place a satchel on the tank. I grabbed the charge and started out to the west. Everyone else figured I wouldn’t be returning so they shook my hand and said goodbye. I didn’t know what to expect. If I die then it’s for the team, but if I live I can continue to help them survive. As I sat in the tree line waiting for the initial assault to begin I saw something. A light hit my eyes as I turned to my left. I saw it coming from further down the tree line. I moved toward the light and to my surprise I found someone. The man I found was no ordinary person. He was our old platoon leader back in the States. Mike McDowell was his name and he was one crazy bastard. Turns out him and 2ndLt Nick Hall came looking for us after we didn’t radio in to command. I radioed Stone and the rest of the squad to inform them that McDowell is here. Best part is that he came packing heat. He pulls away a camo netting he had hidden a few yards away to reveal a FGM-148 Javelin. I grabbed the launcher and set up further down the hill. I pulled up the sights and locked on to the T-90. As the sensor kept a solid beep and fired. The smoke streamed through the sky as the missile came crashing down on the tank. Chunks of metal ripped through the air as the tank was lit up in flames. I could hear Marsden fire his M107 in the distance as well as rifle fire from the rest of the group coming from behind the hangers. McDowell and I rushed down the hill. As I hit the bottom I see a pickup truck with a PMK driving out of Krasnostav. I hit the dirt, let out a long breath, and fired. The shot ripped through the windshield crushing the driver’s skull. The car jack knifed and flipped. As it rolled I saw the gunner fly ahead of the truck. As it hit the last roll it crushed the gunner. He didn’t feel it. His upper body became a mess of red goo. As we got to the airfield all there was to see were bodies. Thunder had been cleared. We then checked the hangers and with luck we found a CH-47 Chinook. We are going home! We set up Marsden and Jock in the ATC tower and the rest of us stayed in the hanger. After today we deserve a rest.
