I'm quite upset at my Blu Ray player atm. Here's why:

My Blu Ray player is a Sony BD-380

When we moved recently, I set up my computer in a different room from the TV, and there's no feasible way to connect my Blu Ray player in the living room to the router in a separate room with a Cat 5. So, I tried buying a usb wifi adapter. Turns out that when it said it could connect to wifi with a usb adapter, it meant only with a Sony one.

So, I said Bully to that and bought a wifi adapter that connects through the Ethernet port.

Netgar WNCE2001

So, I set this up, an it worked fine for the last week, until today, when the wifi signal identifier was red, indicating a weak signal. I thought it could be getting interference from my wireless printer that I just set up yesterday for the first time since we moved 2 weeks ago. So, I turned the printer off, and the signal light's green now.

Here's my new problem, when I run the network settings, go through all the motions, it says that it connects to both the network and the internet fine. But when I try to connect to Hulu or Netflix, says "Checking connection," and after a few seconds either goes back to the home screen, or says "Connection status cannot be confirmed" "A Network error has occurred. Do you want to set the Internet settings?" If I choose no, it goes back to the home screen, if I choose yes, it brings be back to the network setup. Then I go through all the steps, and it says it's connected to the network and internet again. I seem to be stuck in an infinite loop.

Does anyone have any advice?

it is possible that your firewall may be interfering with the connection to the internet. While both your router and the bluray device say that you are in fact connected to the internet and there is no problems with your internet (you can connect to websites on another device, etc.), your firewall may be blocking out the official connection to the internet as it sees the bluray as an unidentified device so for your safety, it is blocking it. There should be a way (depending on your firewall protection program) to allow the firewall to let the bluray have access to the internet.

do yourself a favor and buy a new Samsung bluray player. built in wifi and the "smart" features (apps such as netflix, hulu, all that other stuff) work 1000x better than Sony's. Or if you prefer Sony, just buy a new Sony BD player, which will also have built in wifi.

just this Geek's two cents.

I would contest that. Especially because of Samsung's recent decision to release the E5400 blu-ray, which is a complete PoS for internet functions. On top of that, I think the Samsung have garnered the most complaints per capita sold out of my BBY, probably except for the Toshiba players.

I currently like the Sony BDP-S390 or the Panasonic DMP-BDT220

working as an in-home home theater installer for best buy/Geek Squad, and working a lot with the E5400 closely in particular... I would contest your entire post as well.

Especially the part about it being a PoS for internet functions. The smart hub is the easiest & most fluid of the "smart" devices out there for accessing internet functions. I can only assume you're referring to updates for the apps on the Samsung BD players such as the E5400 not going through immediately recently. Samsung was conducting maintenance on their servers, and being a holiday drive time, a lot of new Samsung devices were accessing said servers while maintenance was being conducted. An issue which has since been resolved. But everyone has their preference when it comes to this stuff.

I like the apple approach of fixing the issue: "Not working? Buy a new one!"

I don't think anyone is just telling him to buy a new one to avoid the issue at hand. It's just that if you're using a BD player that needs a USB dongle to get wi-fi in the first place it's already dated and you might as well put the money for the dongle towards a newer unit. just my opinion anyways.

Haha, I know what you mean, problem was solved so I poked fun at the planned obsolescence of the technical world. The suggestions to buy better equipment made me chuckle.
