Now, assuming an announcement is enough to be considered using a trademark (which is currently being debated, but we'll assume yes), that means they have 3 months (which can be extended 5x) to "use it before losing it" (source).

TL:DR: Valve officially trademarks HL3, giving them 3 months (up to 5x, so 15 months) to either make an announcement of its creation, or to start selling it, or both, or neither...

[edit] fixed 3 years to 3 months, plus this is EU application which has different time schedules on it (I think a year).
