Hey all I know I'm on an ELOA but this topic pertains to the reason I took an ELOA. As some of you know today is my birthday and I finally am turning17!!!!! I am now old enough to enlist in the army(with a parental signature of course) it is something I have been wanting to do for a really long time. I have thought about it for a while now and I have considered the risk and I really want to do this. I have done some research on some mos that the army offers and I have narrowed it down to four that I am very interested in.

1. EOD ( Explosive Ordinance Disposal) basically the bomb squad of the army.

2. Combat medic/ Healthcare Specialist

3. Military Police

4. Calvary Scout

I wanted to know if anybody in this unit has any experience with these jobs and if so can you share your experience with me!

PS: I'm also going to go into the airborne! Hopefully 101st screaming eagles!!!!!

I don't see Infantry....nothing to see here...move along...move along

Also 101st isn't Airborne....it is an air assault unit.(big difference... and you would do well to remember that.)

Airborne would be 82nd

On a more serious note. Speaking as a mechanized infantryman.( we use Bradleys just like cav scouts do) Its a love hate relationship with that vehicle. I am a gunner and getting to shoot that 25mm is friggin awesome. Driving it is fun too. However. Its a bitch to maintain and the wait. OH GOD THE WAITING.

Medics: Best friends of the infantry.

Dont go MP

EOD...is nothing like the movies

If at first you don't succeed....then bomb disposal is probably not for you...

Seriously, good luck with this! I can't really suggest one or another (never been in the military), but good luck! Study hard for the ASVAB or rather the army equivalent. If you need help with any of it, feel free to drop me a message :)

I was considering infantry but I heard a lot of negative things about it. It does meet the criteria of things I want to do. If I get deployed I want to be out on the field not stuck at the base all day which is what infantry can offer me. I heard there is a point system in the army to get promoted and the infantry requires more points than any other mos. Can you shed some light on this?

Thanks for the advice!! That's why I've been on an ELOA I've been studying and stuff.

You know why you hear negative things? its because they are a bunch of P.O.Gs.

I'll admit it. Us infantrymen have a pride that others simply don't have, and cannot understand. In turn we are assholes(mostly) and flaunt that pride.(Proud of it too)

Point system. IS F***ING stupid. While it does show the the soldier is showing initiative by getting as many points as possible. It DOES NOT reflect the leadership skills that he has. For example: We have (had) a Sgt. in my company who had a sh*tstorm of points (college gives a lot of points) but was an absolute terrible leader he got promoted over a guy that was MUCH MUCH more deserving. but didn't have the points to get it before the other.

That was 4 years ago.

Now that same Sgt. is in jail. For murder. Hacked up his sugar momma (she was in her 40s while he was in his mid 20s) with a machete.

Oh and fyi its only harder to get promoted because there aren't as many spots. NOT because it takes more points.

Thanks for the info!! That's why I started this topic to get people's insights. I still have a lot of thinking to do before I make my final decision. I am going to talk to a recruiter tomorrow!

So today I took my ASVAB :D the only parts i found a little challenging was the Arithmetic reasoning and the auto and shop. I dont know shit about cars and tools :'(. Other than that I feel I did well. I have to wait two weeks for the results since I did not take the test at MEPS. Here goes the longest two weeks of my life!

Yeah that was the part I did worst on with the ASVAB, but somehow got picked for a job working on engines and electronics anyway.

hey ascensio, my 'advice' as someone who is also joining up as a regular soldier in the UK (i.e. not an officer) is that whatever you decide to do, give it everything you have. i'm pretty sure that your choice will be what you want to do, so give it your all and 'be the best'. choose something you will enjoy (obviously) but try to stand out as an exemplary guy, because army pay at entry level sucks, and if you want long-term, you will want to be noticed

Yes that's what my recruite told me so I have done a lot of digging into these MOS. I'll also go in as a higher rank because of my time spent in ROTC so that's a few hundred bucks in my pocket.
