Question

Posted

So I have split my two hard drives into a total of four partitions, one of my hard drives is a old one

i just stuck in there and use as a backup for photoes etc.

Now the new one i partitioned with the intention that the C: drive only was going to be used for windows,

little did I know that it quicky fills up with a lot of other crap after a while. In adition i installed steam here

(yeah...) hoping that games, maps etc. could be placed in the other partition.

So my question(s) are:

- Is it possible to place maps, games etc. in another partition? And if so, how?

- If not, do I have to re-install steam on the other partition? And is that recomended?

- If so, will I loose all the maps, skins, achievements etc.?

- Is there anyway to backup my maps, skins, achievements etc. so everything

is the same if i need to install steam on the other partition?

Thank you, Im a big noob on this area.

Use SteamTool

It's been really useful for me as i've started filling up space on my D\ drive and wanted to haev my stuff on my other drive without having to re-download anything, it makes use of the NTFS junctions and basically means you have steam installed over two hard-drives but it still works as one. It should automatically find the steam folder and then you create a folder that you want the gamefolders to be stored in and you choose one click "move to storage" and click "start" and it'll do the rest for you, updates still work and the game will still play as normal.

Wow, they really made a tool for this?! Nice :D

I will check that out, thank you so much!

As a side note, why the 4 partitions? Why not just 1 partition per hd? There isn't usually anything to be gained from this anymore.

I have always just been used to do it like that. The old one as i said i jus stuck in there, and it was already partitioned

because i used to have windows on one, and my documents, pictures, backups on the other.

I thought that was the way you are supposed to do it? So that you can re-install windows without affecting everything else?

As i said im a noob in this area.

And btw, if the tool that Takel showed me doesnt work, do you have any suggestions or tips?

---I have now tried it, and the steamtool does not work for some reason...

Well, if you have a re-install of windows happening, it could be an issue. However, Windows is more than capable of dealing with large partitions. 3 GB drives used to have issues, but don't anymore. For myself, I have a primary physical drive and a secondary physical drive, each with 1 partition only. The whole going through drive letter changes like you are doing... ugh, I'm glad I don't have to do that anymore.

If you want to move part of your dods install into another location you can do it, but it will require its own partition. This is a somewhat advanced thing to be doing, you should be aware that the partition will only be usable in that dods folder, so make it an appropriate size.

Make sure steam isn't running.

Make your partition, say 4GB (?) and assign it a drive letter.

Use robocopy (available in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit) to mirror the folder you want to replace onto the new drive

Delete the folder and recreate an empty folder with the same name.

Right click on my computer, or computer, and choose manage

Go to Disk Management

Right click on the partition where you mirrored your folder and choose change drive letter and paths.

Click Add, Choose Mount in the following empty NTFS folder, click browse

Chose the empty folder you created and hit ok a couple times.

You have now replaced a folder on your computer with its own dedicated partition.

Sounds more advanced, but I should give it a try... If I shouldnt just re-install steam on a bigger partition?

Almost sounds easier :) Can i just make a backup of the folders that have the maps, skins etc. and put them

back in after re-installing?
