That's just a generalization... but there are a lot of people that really don't care where other countries are. It's like asking someone who has never been to the US to know all the states and capitols. There's a few everyone knows, but I'm sure there are a bunch they don't. It's not something everyone learns, unless it's something they are slightly interested in.

I'm in high school now and I can't remember ever being extensively taught about the geographical whereabouts of foreign countries... Just the states. Plus, what we call "social studies" isn't even taught until 11th grade in high school. The last time I learned about the Civil War was in the 7th grade, and that was probably biased to all Hell

As someone who took AP world history in my sophomore year in high school. I would say I have a general idea of where things are. Also I will bet that most people in other countries will say the capital of New York State is New York City. Just saying.

In Serbia in elementary school we learned about practically every country in Europe and also the biggest countries in the world USA,China,Japan,India , Russia etc. USA is big but still i saw ppl didnt even know the capital of USA. No desrespect.

It wasnt until i was 21 years old...did i finally learn that Canada had provinces...no joke. They didnt teach us jack shit in school and it really depends on which state your in. Think of each state as its own country pretty much. Everyones different.....people from california are not the same as people from Montana.

Once you get into university/college courses then teachers start to lift the barriers and tell you more about the world. Agree with evo, the school system nowadays is a joke. Again what is taught to us depends on what state your in and of course the teacher.

I think it was a very Ignorant Generalization, I happen to know quite a few countries outside of the US, being I studied Geography as part of My Anthropology Major. Sure the rednecks of America and the Taboo nature of sensationalized public is what you probably think all "Americans" are, because that's how our shitty media portrays us.

Lystad out of respect for myself and others from America, have to to severely disagree, while I will agree a lot of what you know is Sensationalized.

However I will also agree that Geography is poorly represented in our school systems, I know when I was a young kid 17 years ago, I never once saw an in school map brought down to discuss in detail where countries like Darfur or for that matter Senegal. Thats because as a culture the society like to only apply itself to current affairs, and who we need to know. The more detail comes in college, or private schools where I went to in High School. In High School i was required to take Global studies, and Geography. As do most NY kids in even the public schools.

"American are weird" you mean "AMERICANS" yes we are, we are the only country in the world that glorifies our taboo, redneck, back woods, special needs people, and then Subjugate the intelligent, successful, and artistic-

For example shit like Jerry Springer, or Jersey Shore.

Another reason alot of americans dont know these is that we know where all the big and "more important" countries are, yet there are all the little counties in Europe like luxenbourg (cant spell) that we dont know, most people can name all 50 states and capitols tho

I had to memorize all the nations on all six continents in 7th Grade. Granted in the 10 years I've lost a few, I can still either know where it is, or easily find it on a map. However as Stone said, Americans in general glorify stupid people. No idea why. I fucking hate stupid people.
