After seeking cancer treatment in Cuba and at home, Chavez finally passed away today, according to the Vice President.

This guy made life hell for the U.S. gov't, while befriending some of the world's most apeshit dictators. Definitely someone who will be talked about for decades to come. The article can be found here.

It's absolutely classless to celebrate the death of someone you disagree with. The man was a pomeranian, making a lot of noise, while doing relatively little. He helped a lot of downtrodden, underrepresented people in Venezuela, and affected a lot of positive reforms in public education and social services. But he was a socialist, and he said some stupid shit, so Americans are going to hate him and compare him to dictators regardless.

Disregarding the fact that the US sponsored some of the worst dictators in South America (and worldwide), helped topple democratically elected governments and are party to torture outsourcing. But of course since Chavez was socialist, he's worse.

I don't feel anything regarding his death, I do know that he was a bit of a handful for the U.S., and I don't really care about whether he was socialist, communist, democratic or whatever, the fact is he is dead and history will remember him as a minor player on the world stage while being a recognizable name for us here in North America at least.

He wasn't really that bad of a person. He was a douche, yeah, and he's done some stupid stuff in office, but what politician doesn't do something stupid while in office? Still, he did a lot of good for his country.

That being said... he was a "handful"... since when? The dude might've said a lot of stupid stuff when it came to the US, but he wasn't that bad. He wasn't even an enemy of the US. The dude was just a bit out there. He didn't do anything really that bad aside from attempting to make himself president for life.

And for those bad mouthing him... what's the word of this unit? Respect. Lets remember that even if we didn't agree with the guy and even if he did some nutty things, lets show some respect to him.

Never said a bad word about Chavez. I could have cared less how he treated the U.S. gov't, and I certainly wouldn't celebrate his death. I know he brought Venezuela up to speed in a lot of areas, but he was just off his rocker [as many politicians are]. Let's not forget he became a politician after being imprisoned for attempting a military coup... The dude was like the LAST remnant of 20th Century leadership.

P.S.: Socialism schmocialism. Democracy schmocracy... As far as I'm concerned, if you sit behind a desk and make decisions for other people, you're probably an arsehole. Which makes government in general full of arseholes. Venezuelan, American, Vulcan... All the same when you put on the suit and tie. Call me blue collar, I guess.

100% agree with everything in this post. Especially the part in bold.

After all the shit the CIA pulled in Latin America starting in the 60s, including Operation CONDOR and the removal of Salvador Allende in Chile, none of which the U.S. has apologized for, by rights the U.S. shouldn't expect friendship from ANY Latin American countries.

And if you consider Chavez an enemy d the U.S. you shouldn't really be happy he's gone, because it's more of the same on the way.

Although I celebrate the death of people who torture, traumatize, and murder women and children....Saddam, Osama, Hitler, Pol Pot, etc etc etc.....

Those are people that I think unlaterally everyone can agree were evil people.

These are a few people who have said things about Hugo Chavez's death.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon offered his "deepest condolences to the families and people and the government of Venezuela" and noted Mr Chavez's contributions to his country's development. He will be issuing a formal statement later.

President Francois Hollande said that while Mr Chavez's "temperament and the positions he took were not shared by everyone" he expressed "an undeniable wish to fight for justice and development".

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff

"This death should fill all Latin and Central Americans with sadness," she said. "Hugo Chavez was without doubt a leader committed to his country and to the development of the people of Latin America."

There are alot more as well.

Chavez was one of a HANDFUL in the international community to support Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and the legitimate Syrian government. For that, I have a great respect for the way he was a thorn in the U.S.'s side: Because the U.S. and NATO are pimping the Faux Syrian Army and a bunch of Wahabbi nutjobs [islamists]. I don't think there's any argument who is more evil: Us or Him.

Anyways, I started this thread to post a news article and get your opinions, not to "woo-hoo" the death of a leader. I don't celebrate such events, not even Sheikh bin Laden's death.

Right on. Work hard, play hard. I give two shits less about Americas so called "enemies". We have a whole cabinet full sitting in the White House sending this once great country down the shitter.

What's interesting is that people have been sayings this for a long time, so we either been sliding down the shitter for hundreds of years, or people are over reacting.

As for Chavez, he did some good things, and some not so good things, nobody is perfect.
